Q: Some of the
companies in the termite business offer free inspections. Why do you charge
a fee for your inspections? A: I'll begin by invoking the
old adage: “There's no free lunch.” Keep in mind that the
termite inspector that comes to your home to provide you with a free
inspection has to justify his time in some manner. He will be under pressure
to sell you something. Some of these inspectors work on a commission basis
and are likely to push whole house treatments, which may not be the best option.
There are generally two methods
or approaches in use in the pest control business. One is a selling approach,
the other is service oriented. I utilize the latter. I charge a reasonable
fee for my time and I direct my efforts to your specific needs, the problems
that you have now.
I don't want to leave the impression
that whole house treatments or installing bait stations to attract termites
are unnecessary or without merit. In some cases those methods may be in order.
However, many times that sort of approach is overkill and economically impractical
for some homeowners. You'll have to decide for yourself whether the man providing
a free inspection is going to spend the time and effort required to make a
thorough, diligent inspection resulting in the right treatment strategy for
your particular needs.
My inspection will always include
a written report itemizing all findings and recommendations in an easy to
understand format. I believe that you will find this detailed evaluation well
worth the inspection fee.
